The scenario of viewing and collecting art has noticeably transformed in recent times and it’s a quite pleasant transformation. Gone are the days when art collecting meant a burning hole in your pocket. Correct research and planning can help you to take a step up from being an art enthusiast to a collector. Starting your own collection isn’t as hard as you might think.

1. Determine a budget.

It’s not necessary to spend in lakhs and crores to start an art collection. Set a budget from anywhere from 10- 40 thousand to buy quality artworks. Having an idea of the amount you are willing to spend will help you keep an eye on artworks within that budget.

2. Spend time to gather knowledge

Thanks to the internet, whatever you need to know is just a few clicks away. So, before you step out to attend an exhibition or art fair, scour through the art blogs, websites, databases, and journals to get a fair idea about art movements, mediums, styles, concepts, and artists. You can also go old school and spend time browsing through art magazines or spend time at art galleries and art museums. Once you get a hang of it, you will see certain colors, mediums, styles or subject would appeal to you more. Make a note of them and explore further.

3. Know it all about your favorite artist/s

If a particular artist’s work happens to catch your eye and heart, leave no stones unturned err, I mean webpage unread about that artist. Read up all the information available such as artist’s death of birth and death (if applicable), where the artist lives and works, what did she/ he study. Know more about the galleries, museums or institutions where the artist has exhibited and the awards and publications. All this information will help you gauge if the pricing of the works you are eyeing is fair or not.  Valuation of an artist’s work depends on how much he/ she is established, documented and how widely exhibited his/her worksare.

4. Follow love not trends

The trends in art collecting don’t really matter in the long run. When an artwork appeals to you, it has value for you. Listening to your heart goes a long way to be polished as an art collector. Until enough knowledge is on the place, trends and waves of art styles are secondary. Find what you love and let that guide you.

5. Information counts

It is always wise to make informed decisions, especially when buying artworks. If you are in love with any artists work, try to browse his/ her works and similar style of work by other artists. Take time to explore your options. Browse through galleries, exhibitions, or online art portals and then make an informed decision.
